In a shockingly emotional interview, Cole Sprouse revealed the details of his battle with depression to YouTube star Duan Mackenzie. For the actor responsible for the mega-popular portrayal of Jughead Jones on the teen series “Riverdale,” no amount of fame and fortune could mask the mental anguish he experienced each day, a constant struggle that left the celeb searching for an outlet.
A longtime fan of photography, the 25-year-old actor admitted to Mackenzie that he first explored the art form as a way to cope with his depression. “I was sad and in a dark place. I turned to a hobby to sort of take me out of that…and I found photography,” said Sprouse. “I’ve been doing photography for a while, but I had really used it as an outlet, as a way to create and feel better, and it took off.”
Sprouse then revealed that retreating behind the camera was a way for him to handle the daily pressures of his A-list life.
“Most of my work took place in a landscape, and there was something profoundly serene about those landscapes, and I sort of used those adventures as an attempt to separate from not just the virtual world, but a world I felt paranoid was watching me,” he said.
Eager to share his work with a wider audience, Sprouse posted his breathtaking snaps to Instagram including shots of his family, scenery and even his “Riverdale” co-stars.
The young star has even snapped professional covers for his famous friends, such as Sam Smith for L’uomo Vogue.
“Excited to show you guys my cover and story for L’uomo Vogue this month, starring @samsmithworld,” he captioned the photo. “Pick up a copy if you see it, I’ll be posting some of the other shots over the next couple days. Keep up.”
Closing the interview, Sprouse revealed that his greatest goal is to transfer the emotion he feels behind the lens to those looking at his work. “That’s what I want to sell, that’s how I feel… If people can end up finding joy with that work with the same thing that makes you feel at peace, keep doing it,” he said.
