Angourie Rice to Play This Classic Peter Parker Love Interest in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Spider-Gwen, Spider-Gwen.

Does whatever a spider…cen?

Nothing helpful rhymes with Gwen.

Whatever, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that, according to fresh, juicy rumors from a Japanese fan event promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming, Nice Guys actor Angourie Rice will be playing Gwen Stacy in the upcoming movie.

There are two important things to know about Gwen Stacy. Firstly, she dies in the official canon. That’s pretty much her defining trait across all Spider-Man comics. She’s dead, and that somehow makes her cooler in Peter’s mind than the very much alive, competent, intelligent, accomplished, dependable Mary Jane Watson.

Secondly, Gwen Stacy is now best known as one of a bazillion Spider-Women who run around in the comics causing trouble. Spider-Gwen is a new fan favorite character, and if Marvel is trying to squeeze the character back into cinematic relevance again after Emma Stone did such a good job of pretending to be a corpse, there’s no way that the studio hasn’t thought about the tantalizing possibilities of adding Spider-Gwen to the MCU.

For those of us who prefer Mary Jane – a character who continues to be interesting without dramatically getting her neck snapped, or aping her boyfriend’s super powers – there’s still hope that both characters might show up in the movie, but considering the newfound popularity that Emma Stone brought to Gwen Stacy, this turn of events is hardly unsurprising.

That said, this is still very much a rumor. It could turn out that Homecoming doesn’t feature either of these classic love interests, as it seems that in trailers, Peter is far more interested in Liz Allen instead.

We also still haven’t figured out what Zendaya is up to, as she doesn’t seem to be playing Mary Jane after all – turns out she really is just named “Michelle”.

This’ll be a disappointment to fans of Mary Jane, but considering the fuss that certain elements of that particular fan community kicked up last year, perhaps a movie without MJ or Gwen is simply what we all deserve.
