Despite its popularity in the printed form, “A Series of Unfortunate Events” has always proven a little difficult to adapt to live action.
Thus far, we’ve had an entirely forgettable movie starring Jim Carrey, and an entirely forgettable Netflix show starring Neil Patrick Harris.
It’s difficult to believe that such a ripe source material, combined with either of these talented actors, would end up being so unmemorable, but such is the circumstance that we find ourselves in.
Nevertheless, Netflix has sunk a lot of money into the show thus far, and the streaming service seems eager to capitalize on this by creating a second season what will, hopefully, be better received than the first one.
Of course, the service didn’t do itself any favors by releasing the initial first look at the second season on January 1st. This isn’t a great day for actually getting the news out – even Harris’ greenscreen piece to camera that makes up the bulk of the sneak peek points out that it’s not a great idea to launch a trailer while everyone is hungover.
Perhaps, Netflix is hoping to keep this quiet, as it’s hardly a hugely exciting look at the new season.
There’ll be some kooky things, some weird stuff, some angry villagers. It’s basically pretty standard stuff for any “Unfortunate Events” adaptation, and nothing to show that this season will be anything different to what we’ve had before.
There might be a bigger reveal of some fun stuff in time, but for the moment, it seems as if Netflix is pretty much just assuming that people have already made up their minds about whether or not they’ll watch the show, so there’s no need to try too hard in this initial sneak peek.
It feels like we’re still a long way from seeing a live-action version of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” that will actually do something engaging and memorable, but you never know – this show’s second season might just be hiding some secrets up its sleeves.
