We’re calling it right now – Littlefinger and Arya Stark are going to be making some big deals in Game of Thrones season seven.
We’ve seen rumblings of this for a while – Arya’s costume for season seven features a dagger that almost certainly must have been gifted to her by Littlefinger (no doubt for nefarious purposes), and now, adding a new reason for speculation to the mix, Aidan Gillen has confirmed a fan theory that we’ve all been wondering about for quite some time.
So, as you may recall, all the way back in season two, Arya Stark was working undercover as a maid at Harrenhal. At one point, Littlefinger, who’s visiting, notices her, gives her an odd look, and then continues with his conversation without comment. This has long been debated among Game of Thrones fans, as we’ve attempted to figure out whether Littlefinger recognized Arya, or whether he was successfully fooled by her disguise.
According to Aiden Gillen, who plays Littlefinger, while there’s no solid answer to the question (yet) in terms of Game of Thrones lore, the actor is more than willing to speculate himself:
“It was unclear if he recognized her or not, but I have my own thoughts on that. Yes, I did recognize her — I just didn’t say anything or do anything about it.”
So what’s going on here?
Well, we have a theory – Littlefinger has been plotting of a way to use Arya to his advantage for a very long time now.
The devious Petyr Baelish is only ever after one thing: personal gain. It doesn’t matter to Littlefinger how he achieves it, and he’s willing to use all tools at his disposal to manipulate the situation in his own favor.
All the way back in season two Littlefinger realized that Arya isn’t above a scheme or two herself, and he took mental note of the situation, while being intrigued to see how events would play out.
There’s a good chance we’ll see some payoff to this in the upcoming season seven, as all signs point to Arya making some form of deal with Littlefinger, as he tricks her into working against the interests of her family.
That said, Littlefinger shouldn’t necessarily feel too comfortable with whatever deal he’s about to make with Arya – if any character in Game of Thrones has the skills necessary to double-cross and beat him, it’s Maisie Williams’ character.
If we’re very lucky season seven might bring the moment we’ve been waiting for, as Littlefinger finally gets his comeuppance.
