Over the years, there have been several attempts to visualize the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
From official book cover art to the series of Warner Bros movies, plenty of accomplished artists have lent their talents to trying to capture the magic and wonder of the books by JK Rowling. No matter how beautiful the art, though, there has never been a definitive version of any character design for the series – until now.
In adding more behind the scenes Harry Potter content onto the series' companion website Pottermore, Rowling has shared her own original sketches for characters and events within the first Harry Potter novel.
The insight that these simple sketches provide is very interesting – fans of the series can see a canonical appearance for characters including the Weasley twins, Hagrid, and Professor Snape. There’s also a look at Peeves the Poltergeist, an often ignored character that was omitted from the movie series.
Most interestingly of all, though, the sketches show that writing is but one of Rowling's talents – she’s also a pretty impressive artist.
Perhaps one day we’ll get to see the acclaimed author try a more visual medium for her work, but in the meantime, these Pottermore sketches provide a very welcome additional insight into the world of Hogwarts.
