It’s probably fair to say that the current DC shared universe of movies have proven less that universally popular.
While critics are divided on many parts of this year’s Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, though, many share the belief that Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman is among the strongest elements in both films.
Fans eagerly await news surrounding a solo Batman film, which Affleck is set to both write and direct, as well as starring in the lead role.
According to Joe Manganiello, who will play the movie’s primary antagonist, Deathstroke, Affleck’s take on the superhero genre will be a cut above most big budget action films, as it will feature an intelligent story at its core:
“When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role. We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is.
“I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think A LOT of people are going to be really happy about. It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.”
It’s not yet known what form the upcoming Batfleck movie will take, and when audiences can expect to see it – while DC higher ups are promising it by the end of 2018, Affleck himself has been careful not to pin the project down to a specific date, as the movie is still in its very early planning stages at present.
Whatever fans get from The Batman, here’s hoping it can live up to Manganiello’s claims of a more intelligent, thoughtful take on the superhero formula.
