When you’re on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, and it’s been a long day, and it’s dark in there, and maybe you’ve had a few too many Dole Whips, those animatronics can maybe start to look like real people. But a few lucky folks at the park on Wednesday weren’t just seeing things; that really was Johnny Depp entertaining them as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp, 53, threw on his iconic costume and guyliner to thrill surprised fans of the classic ride, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary in March. Sure, Depp’s presence was based in marketing as much as in whimsy, given that the fifth “Pirates” movies, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opens next month, but the promotional aspect of the appearance didn’t make it any less of a thrill.

Unsurprisingly, riders had their smartphones ready to capture Depp at his Sparrowiest, and the videos flooded social media.

So the next time you’re on a ride at Disneyland, don’t be embarrassed to let yourself hope one of the characters might actually spring to life. Because it can happen in the Most Magical Place on Earth.
