How well do you know your Spider-Man villains?
Sure, we all know Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and Venom. But there are plenty of lesser known characters that Spidey has tussled with over the years who are just itching for a big screen opportunity.
Take, for example, the Enforcers, a trio of powerless mob, er, enforcers, whose lack of creativity in naming themselves is surpassed only by their lack of genuine talent.
The team is made up of three key characters: Montana, Ox, and the wonderfully named Fancy Dan. One of them is strong, one of them is good at martial arts, and one of them has a whip. Clearly when writing issue ten of The Amazing Spider-Man, Stan Lee wasn’t exactly pushing for a Pulitzer.
In spite of this, one of the three is now making it into Spider-Man: Homecoming, as it’s been revealed that Logan Marshall-Green, best known for his role in the abysmal Alien sorta-prequel Prometheus, will be playing Montana in the upcoming movie.
In some versions of Spider-Man continuity, Montana later takes over as the appallingly named villain, The Shocker, who’ll be appearing in this movie, played by Bokeem Woodbine. Clearly, the writers for Homecoming needed a second throwaway character to use Shocker’s zappy gun, and they just searched through Spider-Man lore until they found a name that worked.
This would explain why Marshall-Green’s character has been given the name of Jackson Brice, Montana’s real identity. Anyone who’s expecting a daring lasso fight in Homecoming will probably be disappointed, as this is likely meant as little more than an Easter Egg in a larger story about the far more serious subject of a man in a giant bird costume with a laser that can cut boats in half.
Regardless, fans of The Enforcers can rejoice today. Even though a fan club for the characters would only have a single member, and his name is Stan Lee.
