While Sigourney Weaver may be some time away from returning to her most iconic role, delays in production haven’t stopped the actor from expressing her excitement at the upcoming project.

Speaking of her next appearance in the Alien franchise, Weaver told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s a great story and it’s satisfying to me to give this woman an ending”. According to Weaver, the plot of the film will focus on Ellen Ripley, filling in gaps in the timeline and the battles that she’s faced in the years in the intervening years since the earlier movies in the franchise. The movie will also delve into her past, explaining more about the character’s backstory than has been seen in the past.

This follows news from last week, wherein Weaver confirmed that the as-yet untitled movie will not be in the same canon as the poorly received Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, both of which featured Weaver in a starring role. According to Weaver, “It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to [the new] movie”.

Fans who are eager to see this final appearance from Ripley will have to wait a while – production for the movie has been delayed until Ridley Scott concludes work on his sequel to Prometheus, now entitled Alien: Covenant. Delays to production have also meant that Weaver needs to wait until she’s finished with filming a series of Avatar sequels that have filled her own schedule for the foreseeable future.

While not much is known about Weaver’s final Alien movie, the actor is certainly excited about it, and is looking forward to finally getting the chance to film it at some point in the future.
