Who’s ready for some exciting Hulk-on-Thor action?
The rivalry between the two characters has captivated fans ever since The Avengers saw the pair squaring off in aboard Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, and from the looks of it, we’ll be getting an amazing fight to the death in the upcoming Thor Ragnarok.
Newly released concept art for the movie shows both Hulk and Thor trapped in an alien gladiatorial ring, locked in deadly combat.
Comic book fans will recognize this as coming straight from the pages of Planet Hulk, a comic in which Hulk is enslaved on an alien planet and forced to fight for sport, until he eventually frees himself and leads a revolution to conquer the planet.
It’s not clear how much of this story will appear in Ragnarok, as the movie’s description seems to focus more on Thor’s story arc instead:
“In Marvel Studios' "Thor: Ragnarok," Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok - the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization - at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger - the Incredible Hulk!”
What’s interesting is that none of these new pieces of concept art show Thor wielding his hammer, suggesting that the movie synopsis isn’t overemphasizing the separation between the God of Thunder and his beloved Mjolnir.
This being the case, it’ll be interesting to see how well Thor does in a one-on-one fight against the Hulk, who, let’s face it, is an awful lot more powerful than the hammerless Asgardian.
