Plenty of cartoon characters have provided the inspiration for live action movies: Garfield, The Flintstones, and Avatar: The Last Airbender have all been adapted into feature length movies with human actors. While these films haven’t received particularly warm responses from their respective fan communities, that hasn’t stopped one group of fans from creating a new movie imagining what Futurama would be like in real life.
The trailer for the fan project, which has recently debuted, shows just how far the movie’s creators have gone to stay true to the visuals of the original series, with impressive sets that perfectly recreate the cartoon world of Futurama, and costumes which do a good job of capturing each character, even if the results are somewhat offputting.
There’s something odd about watching human actors perfectly recreate motions and movements from a cartoon, and many of the character designs fall into Uncanny Valley, but the project is impressive, and far outstretches what’s normally capable for fan films.
There’s no official word on when the finished movie will be released, so for now, all that fans can learn about the movie comes from its trailer, which shows off many of the common locales of the Futurama universe, as well as giving each main character a moment to shine.
During its time on the air, Futurama developed a cult following, despite suffering repeatedly at the hands of studio executives. The final season of the show aired in 2013.
