People Magazine has released a very nice little group photo of all the key cast members of Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
It’s fun to see all of the amazing actors that are appearing in this film, from Colin Firth to Julianne Moore, the increasingly impressive Taron Egerton, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, and – hey, wait! What’s Elton John doing there?!
Okay, so we’ve known about this casting for well over a year now, but it still comes as something of a surprise, especially considering that John is missing from every trailer for Kingsman 2 that we’ve had to far. Matthew Vaughn has a secret up his sleeve for Elton John, and it looks like we’re not going to learn anything about his role until the movie is in theaters.
All we know for certain is that Elton John is playing Elton John – according to the movie’s director, Sir Elton will be playing himself, but he’ll be “Vaughn-ized”, with a wacky personality to fit the tone of the rest of the movie.
This is saying something, especially when you consider that Colin Firth has described John as “larger than life”. If he doesn’t turn up wearing an enormous feather coat, Matthew Vaughn has missed a trick.
The Kingsman series thus far hasn’t really shied away from throwing in big names for shock value alone – the first movie features a pre-Star Wars revival Mark Hamill (presumably just grateful for the promise of a hot meal and a place to sleep), and features the back of Barack Obama’s head (presumably an actor, of course) to try and drive home the stakes of the movie.
There’s even a fake European princess so convincing that you’d wonder how Vaughn convinced royalty to make a cameo that involved showing her butt. It’s a weird film.
According to certain rumors during filming, there had been talks of including Elton John in the first Kingsman, along with similar cameos from Adele, Lady Gaga, and David Beckham.
This all turned out to be false, but with John appearing in the sequel, we have to wonder whether there might have been some truth to these rumors, and whether this group of celebrities were meant to appear as part of the mind-blowing finale of the original film (see what we did there?).
If so, it could simply be that Matthew Vaughn has taken his original plans for Elton John, tweaked them a bit, and thrown them into the new movie, now that the Kingsman series has enough clout to attract a famous musician’s attention.
It’s worth assuming that Elton John won’t exactly be a hero, coming to the rescue at the moment the Kingsman need help.
Considering that Julianne Moore’s character plans to deliver cocaine to America using drones, we might reasonably suspect that John could be one of her patrons.
If that’s the case, it’ll be interesting to see how the cameo plays out – famous musicians are not normally eager to actively portray themselves snorting cocaine in major movies.
But then, how else do you end up with musical hits like Crocodile Rock?
