Gal Gadot has been around in Hollywood for several years now, but has never quite received a warm welcome from audiences as a whole.
Perhaps it’s her background, as a beauty queen turned actress. Perhaps her first big role in a “Fast and Furious” movie was filmed so heavily through the Male Gaze that it was impossible for many viewers to take her seriously.
Or maybe people just don’t like her accent, and are strangely opposed to the idea of any Hollywood star sounding like they’re from anywhere east of London.
For whatever reason, going into last year’s “Wonder Woman”, many audiences seemed wary of Gal Gadot to say the least. Many questioned whether she was a worthwhile actor, assuming that she couldn’t possibly be more than just a pretty face.
Somehow, these debates still rage on some parts of the internet. This seems silly, as Gadot has now been named as the highest grossing female actor of 2017.
This makes sense – “Wonder Woman” ended up being a big deal, and “Justice League”, despite not grabbing the success that Warner Bros was hoping for, ended up being a pretty big earner nonetheless.
It’s not at all surprising that Gadot has achieved this, as 2016’s highest grossing actress was Scarlett Johansson, who similarly managed a lot of financial success thanks to a role in “Captain America: Civil War”.
Still, though, there will be plenty of commenters who will downplay Gadot’s achievement, arguing that she was simply along for the ride.
Anyone who questions her probably misses the point of what made “Wonder Woman” such a big hit.
It’s worth assuming that Gadot will be around for a while to come. She’s managed to become a cultural icon in her own right, having proven her worth as a symbol of female empowerment.
Whether the wider public accepts Gal Gadot or not, it’s hard to ignore her rising star. She’s now proven herself as a bankable star, and we’re going to be seeing her plenty over the next few years.
