It would seem like a match made in heaven. Two caffeinated drinks, forever wrapped up in the same vague stimulant bracket that allow the tired and generally fatigued of the world to endure more time awake than they really want to.
Surely Coca-Cola’s new attempts at a coffee-flavored coke should be perfect, right?
As if often the case with food and drink, throwing two delicious, wonderful things together doesn’t always work out too well.
The new coffee coke is currently only available in Japan, and from the sounds of people’s responses to the beverage, it might not ever get a wider release.

According to Japanese site Shin-Shouhin (via Metro), this drink isn’t utterly terrible, but it’s nothing to write home about either:
“To be frank, it’s not a very delicious aroma. I didn’t think it tasted good, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”
Not as bad as it could be?
If that’s the best praise that can be levelled against coffee Coca-Cola, then things aren’t looking good.
Nevertheless, this hasn’t stopped customers from trying the drink in Japan, and if Coca-Cola Coffee Plus (such as it is called) manages to sell well enough, this might be something that will stick around long enough for specialty import stores in the West to get their hands on it.

Thus far it seems that the majority of early adopters are treating this drink like a weird novelty, and nobody’s expecting it to stick around forever. Sure, it’s fun to try once for the sake of seeing what it’s like, but this isn’t about to become anybody’s favorite drink, and it’s not something to (literally) lose sleep over.
Don’t count on coffee-flavored Coca-Cola coming to the US anytime soon, but considering the initial reviews from people who’ve actually tried the stuff, that’s probably for the best.
