What do you want for lunch? Feel like grabbing a burger?
No? You want something a little lighter? How about a handful of flowers?
It might sound like a weird concept, but British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is now giving customers the opportunity to buy fresh edible flowers.
This isn’t meant as a colorful alternative to a salad, though – these flowers are intended as cooking ingredients in larger meals. According to a spokesperson for the chain, this new food option has been added to store shelves as a result of growing demand for these flowers as customers have been made aware of their potential from various cooking shows.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen The Great British Bake Off that the entire nation is somewhat obsessed with home baking – many have begun taking their creations to a new level by decorating their cakes with fresh, edible flowers, and as the trend has grown, Sainsbury’s has stepped in to supply customers’ demand.

While it’s unlikely that this trend will catch on around the rest of the world just yet, it’s hard to deny that there’s something inherently British about the desire to bake cakes at home that are decorated by adorable edible flowers.
Drinking tea, eating cakes, and obsessing over flowers: three things the British do best.
