Smokin’ Ed Currie has created the world’s spiciest pepper … again.
After 10 years in the making, Currie, the proprietor of the grossly but aptly PuckerButt Pepper Company, has concocted the Pepper X—a badass name and probably a callback to the mysterious Racer X of Speed Racer fame (though the name’s badassery is admittedly weakened by Matthew Fox’s take on the character in 2008’s mess of a film).
Currie is also the creator of the Carolina Reaper pepper—infamous for its ability to do this to a man’s mouth and this to a fire-breathing idiot’s lungs. The Reaper was the world’s spiciest pepper until May, when the Dragon’s Breath pepper and its 2.48 million Scoville heat units beat out the Reaper’s 2.2 million, though its status as the world’s hottest has yet to be verified by Guinness World Records.
Hobby grower Mike Smith, creator of the Dragon’s Breath, may never get that satisfaction.
Currie has sent his submission of the Pepper X to Guinness, and expects his new creation—measured at a ridiculous 3.18 million Scoville units—to be confirmed as the world’s spiciest pepper in November.
For now, the closest you can get to consuming a Pepper X is via hot sauce The Last Dab.
The hot sauce, which is a little cooler at a mere 2.3 million Scoville units, has already sold out. But you can see what it does to celebrities on the wing-eating-slash-interview web series Hot Ones, where buffalo wings adorned with The Last Dab represent the final stage of mouth-burning meat.
