Formerly Cool Words That Just Make You Sound Old AF Now
Before “lit,” “woke” and “spilling the tea,” there was different slang. Slang that made us sound cool. The late ’90s and early ’00s added so many good phrases to our vocabulary. Sadly, we can’t use most of them anymore.
Because after a couple of years (or decades), it’s just slang that makes you sound old. Teenagers these days are a tough crowd, so avoid using any of this old slang if you don’t want to sound out of touch.
Redonkulous

“Redonkulous” was used as a cool and much-needed way of adding extra emphasis on “ridiculous.” It was usually said in a positive or complimentary way.
But if you still say it today, well, it would be nothing short of, for lack of a better word, redonkulous.
Bling Bling

“Bling bling,” or just bling, was fancy, shiny, sometimes excessive jewelry. You know, the way shiny things catch the light and go “bling bling.” You might be able to get away with using this today.
But even if you try to say it, you’ll probably sound kind of old.
Off The Chain/Off The Hook

“Off the hook” was cool for a little bit but was quickly replaced by “off the chain” for those 2000s teenage badasses. “Off the hook” was relegated to something dads said to fit in with their kids.
Sadly, both of these make us all sound like dads now.
Coolio/Coolie

Just like the renowned rapper himself, the word “coolio” was way cooler than just regular cool. But 2000s girl know there was an even better word, popularized by our former idol Lizzie McGuire.
That word was “coolie.” It was the same idea, but so much cuter.
