You’ll be hard-pressed to find a person in America who thinks that forcing animals to fight each other isn’t wrong. Unfortunately, this practice is more commonplace than you’d imagine, as animal fighting rings pop up across the country from time to time, and it’s pretty hard to track them down in order to shut them down. Well, it seems like the animals are taking justice into their own hands. In California, a cockfighting bird stabbed a man to death with a knife that was attached to its leg.
Jose Luis Ochoa, the 35-year-old who the bird went after, was pronounced dead at the hospital, around two hours after the wound originally occurred. This all went down in central California in Tulare County.
The coroner reported the man was brought into the hospital for a “sharp force injury” to his right calf. Delay in medical treatment is suspected to be the cause of death, as Ochoa didn’t seek medical attention for some time after the initial cut from the knife.
Sgt. Martin King was baffled by the entire thing. “I have never seen this type of incident,” he told the Bakersfield Californian. And that’s no ordinary feat considering King has been on the force for nearly 20 years.
When the police investigated the scene, dead roosters and other objects suggesting cockfighting were found. No arrests were made, but Ochoa had been fined for owning and training animals to fight according to court reports.
