It took him 28 hours, but Cam Newton finally apologized for laughing at the idea that a woman could know anything about football.

“After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women,” Newton said in a video he posted to Twitter. “And to be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.

“I’m a man who tries to be a positive role model to my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others. I take ownership to everything that comes with that. What I did was extremely unacceptable.”

The video was dropped eight hours after Dannon Oikos Yogurt announced they’d be pulling advertisements featuring Newton immediately.

On Wednesday, Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer asked Newton about Devin Funchess and the physicality of the receiver’s routes.

Newton then described her question as “funny” because it came from a woman: “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. Like, it’s funny.”

He apparently said even worse stuff when she approached him about the comments privately.

Despite the day-plus (and countless dollars out of his pocket) it took him to realize his mistake, the sports world appeared to accept his apology.
