Charles Barkley is a master of unscripted banter, and only unscripted banter. Because when you throw something to read at him, things go very, very wrong.

Shaquille O’Neal got a round of applause for successfully completing an ad read during Thursday night’s “Inside the NBA.”

That didn’t set will with Barkley, his fellow analyst.

“Timeout,” a baffled Chuck sputtered. “Y’all giving him credit for knowing how to read?!”

Before Shaq could even get the challenge out of his mouth, Barkley was grinning, knowing what sort of fall he’d set himself up for.

Still, he agreed to go through with it—he’d attempt to read the same copy from the prompter.

He made it two words before blowing it.

Granted, “alienist”—an outdated term for a psychiatrist—isn’t the easiest word to read or say.

But Chuck actually has successfully read from the prompter before. He just lived to regret it, succumbing to the same prank that once befell Ron Burgundy.

Barkley’s reading mishap inspired the crew to show the clip, from all the way back in 2008.
