Restaurant Bans Mom Because Of Her Tattoos

Tattoos have been growing in popularity over the last couple of years. However, years ago, having any visible tattoos was seen as tacky, or something an ex-convict would do.

Despite tattoos becoming more accepted as of recent years, people still manage to discriminate against those who are tattooed. This exact thing happened to a young mother and a doctor who was thrown out of a restaurant.

Her Strange Hobby

Sarah Gray was a successful doctor and mother residing in Adelaide, Australia. She had a few hobbies that she frequently indulged in, from hiking to getting tattoos. Sarah loved tattoos and almost every inch of her body was covered.

Everyone in the tattoo community knows who Sarah is, but that's not always a good thing.

Personal Preference

Tattoos are a hit or miss for some people. Some people love the look of various tattoos all over Sarah's skin, but some hate it. It's all about personal preference and Sarah does not care what people think of her.

Sarah is a very successful doctor, but some people do not care about her status, they care about what is on her skin.

Welcoming Person

Sarah was aware that not everyone liked what she had done to her body. However, Sarah accepts that. People are entitled to their own beliefs and choices, and she celebrates differences rather than resisting them.

But, sadly, things aren't often so straightforward.

Judgemental People

The problem arises when judgmental people make assumptions or are biased against persons who have tattoos. Sarah has suffered discrimination and even aggression as a result of the tattoos on her body.

The most recent one was particularly ludicrous. It upset Sarah so much that she decided to take it to social media.

Joyous Occasion

Sarah and her husband had been married for 10 years and wanted to celebrate the occasion at a restaurant on the Gold Coast. The couple was so excited to spend their anniversary together that day.

Sarah had no idea that hatred and prejudice were about to destroy their beautiful day.

Her Soulmate

Sarah's husband's body was also covered in tattoos. “Through the tattooing industry, I found my soulmate,” she shared with a journalist.

They arrived at the restaurant with no issues. Sarah's best friend could not stop raving about the restaurant so she was excited to try it for herself. But it didn't take long for things to turn sour.

He Was Approaching Them

Sarah and her husband were sharing a bottle of wine at their reserved table when they spotted a manager approaching them.

They initially thought that it was strange that a manager was coming to them, but they believed that he might have just wanted to welcome them to the establishment. If only they understood how far they were off the mark.

He Was Not Friendly

Sarah gave the manager a big smile and asked him, "how are you doing today?"

The manager seemed irate and he was in no mood for small talk. He gave Sarah and her husband one look and said, “Sorry, Mr. and Mrs., but we’re going to have to ask you to leave the restaurant. We have a strict ‘no visible tattoos allowed’ policy. Thank you for your understanding.”

She Couldn't Believe Him

“That was a little disappointing, to say the least,” Sarah said regarding the incident. She couldn't hold it together at the time. She went up to the manager and addressed him.

“But what’s wrong with our tattoos? I see some other people with tattoos around here,” she challenged him. A few other diners in the establishment had tattoos on their arms and legs, though they were far more subtle and understated than Sarah and her husband's. However, the manager's response was perplexing.

The Manager Gets Disrespectful

“Mrs., if you allow me to say so, your tattoos are a little bit too over the top. It might be intimidating for some of the other guests, and it doesn’t comply with the restaurant’s policy. I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do. Have a good evening.”

That comment made Sarah and her husband furious. And this is what they did.

They Were Mad

Sarah found the manager’s comment really rude and even insulting. It made her not even want to have anything to do with that restaurant. So she and her husband got up and just walked to the door.

This episode was particularly outrageous. But as Sarah admitted, it wasn’t the first time that something similar happened to her.

It Happened Before

Sarah has revealed that she’s used to being ignored by shop assistants and denied entry at casinos and restaurants. On the last occasion, this happened when she was in the company of some of her friends coming out of a tattoo convention. Fortunately, it was fixed.

‘I was able to discuss my concerns for unfair discrimination based solely on our appearance with management, and they bent the rules to allow us access,’ she said.

But Some People Aren’t That Tolerant

‘Quite a few night venues seem to have this policy, and although it doesn’t affect me very often as I hardly go out, it can be super frustrating when we get categorized as “bad people” or being gang afflicted due to our colorful skin,’ she also said.

It doesn’t end there. Recently, she was looking for a pair of designer heel shoes for her birthday, and she was ignored by the staff of three different stores. They just refused to help her find shoes of her size.

Is That Fair?

It’s really a disgrace that in this day and age, so many people are made the target of discrimination and bigotry just for their own personal aesthetic taste. Apparently, it doesn’t matter if you’re a respectable, law-abiding person or even a doctor: if you wear tattoos, you’re a pariah in the eyes of some people.

What do you think? Should discrimination against people with tattoos be considered a hate crime, or should there just be more education on the matter?
