Hey, Man: Here Are The Funniest MCU Side Characters

Who are the funniest MCU characters?

2008 was a wild year for superhero cinema. Christopher Nolan changed the game with The Dark Knight. He proved onscreen depictions of heroes can be gritty, complicated and, well, dark. But Kevin Feige had other plans. Iron Manplans. Cinematic friggin’ universe plans. Feige proves that onscreen depictions of heroes can be vehicles for comedy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, gets belly-full-of-popcorn laughs on the regular. From the Avengers to the smaller side-roles, everyone’s got a zinger. So let’s look at the funniest MCU characters to ever grace the silver screen.

Gef – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Played with raw enthusiasm by comedian Steve Agee, Gef cuts quite the striking figure right out of the gate.

His vibe is something like “Steampunk Silverlake.” In a movie full of loud noises, colors, and quips, this character cuts through it all and demandsour attention.

Even his silent reactions to what’s going on around him, which remind us a bit of a Terry Gilliam joint, get us every time.

Thanks to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and actor Winston Duke, we now have the funniest barking scene in cinema. As Martin Freeman’s whiny character tries to explain something or other, M’Baku and his fellow tribespeople literally bark him into silence.

Duke then, masterfully, ends the set piece with a sly smile. It’s funny because of the clash of emotional contexts, and it’s rich because of its political subtext.

Justin Hammer – Iron Man 2

Sam Rockwell is the king of slimy/charismatic fast-talkers, and it’s an absolute pleasure to watch him shimmy his way through Iron Man 2 as the corporate foil to Mickey Rourke’s physical villain. Our favorite running joke involves a particular bird, and a particular set of verbal gymnastics about said bird.

Colonel Chester Phillips – Captain America: The First Avenger

Can we give it up right quick for Tommy Lee Jones, deadpan comedian? From Men In Black to Hope Springs (where my Hope Springs-heads at?), Jones knows how to cut through the nonsense and deliver an unfeeling joke. In the first, eternally underrated Captain America flick, he anchors Rogers’ trials with comedic groundedness. But he’s not kissing you.
