We all know it’s always extremely cold in Alaska and that it’s the country where you’ll see many Siberian Huskies and Malamutes, but what if we told you that many of the facts are actually wrong?

20. There Are Strange Moose Laws

Some states have the craziest laws, but Alaska includes a “moose-specific legislation” that is pretty weird. It seems you are not allowed to view a moose from a plane or to give a moose a beer.

You’re also forbidden to whisper in someone’s ear when they are hunting a moose.

19. Over 100 Volcanoes in Alaska

Believe it or not, but 80% of the active volcanoes in the US are in Alaska. In the past three centuries, 50 volcanoes have erupted and are active.

In 1912, the Novarupta and Katmai erupted, creating the most massive “20th-century eruption on earth,” wrote Alaska Volcano Observatory.

18. The State Flag Designed By a Kid

Alaska’s state flag represents the Big Dipper and the North Star over a deep blue background. Benny Benson, a 13-year old kid, designed the flag in the late 1920s. The young boy won a watch with the flag emblem and also a scholarship of $1,000!

The state flew the flag in 1927 for the first time.

17. Dog Mushing, an Official Sport in Alaska

Dogs pulling sleighs always make us think of Alaska. Starting in 1972, dog mushing became the official sport in Alaska. The state dog is the Malamute husky, but today, many dogs used for pulling sleighs are crossbreeds.
