Just one day removed from the joy and merriment of Christmas celebrations, Rihanna lost her cousin to gun violence. While the 29-year-old singer was enjoying spending the holiday with friends and family in her home country of Barbados, their seasonal festivities were cut short as 21-year-old Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne was gunned down near his home in St. Michael, Barbados.
The “Work” singer took to Instagram late that same night (December 26) to post pictures celebrating the love and life of her late cousin. Included in her tribute post was an added plea to #EndGunViolence.
“RIP cousin… can’t believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms,” she wrote. “never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man! 😢🙏🏿❤ #endgunviolence”
In another sobering post, Rihanna highlighted Alleyne’s good-natured lust for life by sharing a video of the young man smiling at the camera before adding, “It’s nice to wake up.”
Local Barbadian news outlet Nation News subsequently revealed the specifics of the crime to the concerned public. “Preliminary investigations revealed that at around 7 p.m., Alleyne was walking through a track in the area of his house when he was approached by a man who shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene,” reported NN.
Sadly, Alleyne’s injuries proved to be fatal and he later passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The love shared between Rihanna and Alleyne is clearly apparent in the 21-year-old’s birthday dedication to his famous family member earlier this year.
In a show of support, fans have been busy flooding the #RIPTavon hashtag with their heartfelt condolences.
Our hearts and thoughts are with Rihanna and her family during this tragic time of mourning.
