Barbara Walters Called Katy Perry a Tragic Mess

You’re breaking music records left and right. You’re at the top of your career. You’re raking in millions for lending your name to lipsticks and perfumes. That still doesn’t give you the right to be late for your sit-down interview with the legendary Barbara Walters herself.

In the latest issue of Billboard magazine, Katy Perry told a funny anecdote from back in 2011, when Barbara dissed her with the kind of gusto only someone who’s interviewed tyrants like Saddam Hussein can muster.

Katy, who was playing Madison Square Garden later that night, was running late for Barbara’s annual “Most Fascinating People” TV special and it didn’t bode well with the iconic anchor.

“I shouldn’t have done the interview,” the pop star admitted to Billboard, citing overwork, exhaustion, and stress from her pending divorce from Russell Brand, which would be announced later that year.

“I’d prepped everyone that I was running late, but Barbara showed up at the original time anyway,” Katy remembered. “When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! Yes, b*tch!’ I think it’s the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me.”

With the knowledge now that Katy was having troubles with her marriage, Barbara took to her show “The View” on Monday to apologize. “Katy, if I made you feel at all unhappy,” she began, “during a time when you were obviously unhappy, and I didn’t know, I’m sorry. But you can’t always know!”

Here’s a clip from that special in 2011:
