Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s Argument over “Sherlock” is Adorable

By this point, we’ve all fallen in love with the onscreen bromance (or romance, depending on your own personal headcanon) between the lead characters in “Sherlock”, played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

The course of true love never did run smooth, and these two crimefighting partners never seem to go very long without getting into some form of argument or other.

It’s pretty wonderful, then, when real life mirrors fiction. Following some remarks from Martin Freeman that essentially boil down to “I’m just so tired, you guys”, Benedict Cumberbatch has responded by calling Freeman “pathetic” and cajoling him to buck up and embrace the future possibility of a fifth season of “Sherlock”.

Holmes vs Watson

Last month, speaking with British newspaper The Telegraph, Freeman suggested that “Sherlock” is “not fun anymore”, in large part because of the expectations of all of the show’s many, many fans. After four seasons, one Christmas special, and an awful lot of press events, Freeman feels the pressure is too great, and it’s too hard to find time in his schedule.

After all, he’s seen some phenomenal success off the back of his time on “Sherlock”. He played Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” (opposite Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug), and he’s recently done well as Everett Ross in “Black Panther) adjacent to Cumberbatch’s sister MCU movie, “Doctor Strange”).

With everything Martin Freeman’s been doing lately, how could he possibly have time to reunite with Benedict Cumberbatch?!

What’s really fun is Cumberbatch’s response, which is totally in-keeping with his character. While Freeman is here taking the role of the put-upon everyman yet again, the actor behind Sherlock is at once insulting and berating his friend, while also encouraging him to go off on another hairbrained adventure.

Said Cumberbatch, in a follow-up interview with The Telegraph:

“It’s pretty pathetic if that’s all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality. What, because of expectations? I don’t know. I don’t necessarily agree with that… I just don’t feel affected by that in the same way, I have to say.”

Essentially, Cumberbatch is saying that Freeman should stop worrying and just embrace “Sherlock” in all its wonder. Stop dithering, and commit to another season already! Who cares what the fans think one way or the other.

A Couple’s Quarrel

I love this. I’m so thrilled at how perfectly in-character these two actors are, even when having a minor squabble over the future of the franchise that put them on the map.

I especially love that Cumberbatch feels comfortable enough with Freeman to call him “pathetic” while simultaneously pleading for him to get the band back together. These are a pair of actors that are utterly inseparable for a reason!

Here’s hoping the real John Watson finally throws his hands up, rolls his eyes, and joins Sherlock for another three episodes of mayhem.

If not, the pair are probably going to have some awkward moments on the set of future Marvel movies that they’ll inevitably be making together!

You just can’t split up Holmes and Watson!
