The Original Version Of Every Fairy Tale Is Way, Way Darker Than You Think
The fairy tales you grew up with have changed a lot in the hundreds of years of their existence. Because even the Disney versions feature their share of danger, death and abusive behavior. But they’ve got nothing on the originals.
The original versions of most fairy tales are dark. Like really, really dark. So here are some especially dark fairy tales that you probably still love today.
But only because you don’t realize how much more twisted those stories were in the first place.
Sleeping Beauty

In Disney’s beautifully animated adaptation of Sleeping Beauty from 1959 Princess Aurora falls into a deep sleep after pricking her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel. Worst birthday present ever!
Don’t worry about her though, a handsome prince that she just happened to have a woodland dance party with earlier in the day comes to her rescue and wakes her with a sweet and gentle kiss. Cute!

In the oldest known versions of Sleeping Beauty no dashing prince comes along to wake up Princess Napsalot with a kiss. Instead a traveling king finds her sleeping body, rapes and impregnates her and then carries on his merry way.
Kings will be kings, amiright? Princess Snoozebutton only wakes up when one of the twins she birthed IN HER SLEEP sucks a magical siesta inducing splinter out of her finger.
Goldilocks And The Three Bears

When The Bear Family goes on an outing some random blonde kid out traipsing through the woods breaks into their house and takes a lot of liberties with their things.
Being a home invader is exhausting so she takes a nap in Baby Bear’s bed which is where she’s found when the bears come home.
After waking up to three confused and irritated Bears, Goldi is all “my bad” and runs off and suffers no consequences.
Goldilocks And The Three Bears

There really isn’t a moral if the story ends that way. The flaxen haired rascal doesn’t learn anything other than don’t fall asleep in houses you’ve broken into.
Meanwhile the bears get to feel unsafe in their own home until they get a better alarm system. But there are other endings to this story.
In traditional tellings the story tends to end with either the bears ripping Goldilocks apart or her jumping out the window and breaking her neck. That’ll teach her!
