The plot to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 features a few characters which differ somewhat from their comic book counterparts.
No character has been more altered than Ego the Living Planet, who, when appearing between the pages of Marvel’s printed works, is neither the father of Star Lord, nor a small fleshy human who looks like a bearded, two-eyed Snake Pliskin.
So how exactly can a giant planet-sized entity impregnate a human woman? And how could such a union possibly produce Chris Pratt? Finally, James Gunn has shared the answer to this most perplexing question.
“Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways. He’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell.
“I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.”
What’s fun about the way that Gunn has phrased this is it makes it sound as if Kurt Russell is literally the human avatar of Ego the Living Planet – no acting required.
Either that, or Ego is a fan of The Thing and liked the irony of making a human avatar that looks exactly like the film’s alien shapeshifter-murdering protagonist.
Whatever the reasoning behind this, it seems that, as suspected, Kurt Russell is Ego’s human avatar. The character will likely also turn up in planetary form, because if you’re including a Living Planet in your story, just showing off its human face would be incredibly boring.
