Ah, Pacific Rim. A franchise about giant robots fighting underwater monsters, that’s as silly and ridiculous as possible while somehow still being more believable than anything Vin Diesel has appeared in over the past ten years.
Maybe it’s the actors that are drawn to these movies. While Pacific Rim: Uprising has lost the fierce gravitas of Idris Elba and the someone more subdued charm of Charlie Hunnam, it’s instead picked up The Force Awakens star John Boyega.
That kind of feels like a net win for the franchise. It’s hard to argue that Finn is a great choice for this ultra silly movie sequel.

Principle photography on Uprising (previously titled Maelstrom) wrapped months ago, but Boyega is back and ready for more as he goes through reshoots for the movie. These aren’t believed to be the kind of enormous, movie-altering reshoots of a Rogue One or a Suicide Squad, but rather, standard pickups that are needed to fill in gaps and give editors additional options for various scenes.
It’s possible to see in Boyega’s facial hair how the movie is hoping to tie his character to that of his father’s – Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of the ill-fated Stacker Pentecost from the first movie.
Idris Elba’s character may have had his flaws, but at least he wasn’t quite as overthetop as his own father when it came to naming his son. Who calls their kid “Stacker”?!
Anyway, this movie’s on the way, John Boyega seems to be having fun, and it’s worth assuming we’ll be seeing Jaegers beat up Kaiju for years to come if this sequel successfully launches a franchise.
For everyone who’s tired of Transformers movies and wants a little variety in their robot battles, this prospect sounds pretty good.
