Kelly Clarkson: Clive Davis Said I Was a Sh*tty Writer

Matt Dekneef

It’s been a loud and busy day for record exec Clive Davis.

The 80-year-old reveals he’s bisexual in his new memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life, but as that golden fanfare fades out, its replaced with a chapter in it he’s devoted to his strained relationship with Kelly Clarkson.

Except, the pop singer, who Clive sweetly refers to as the “winner of a talent contest,” isn’t ready to sing along with all his claims. In fact, according to Kelly, Clive’s notes are completely off scale, and now she’s striking back with her own tune to set the record straight on this dissonant melody. In her own lyrical words (and the last of my music puns, promise)…

“Hey y’all…So I just heard Clive Davis is releasing a memoir and spreading false information about me and my music. I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans. It feels like a violation. Growing up is awesome because you learn you don’t have to cower to anyone – even Clive Davis.”

This “memory lapse?” That she had a meltdown in his presence over her smash sing-along “Since U Been Gone.”

“First, he says I burst into ‘hysterical sobbing’ in his office when he demanded ‘Since You Been Gone’ be on my album. Not true at all. His stories and songs are mixed up,” she writes.

The track involved was actually “Because of You,” which Clive disliked and tried to kill on arrival.

“I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a ‘sh*tty writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.’ He continued on about how the song didn’t rhyme and how I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with. But I continued to fight for the song and the label relented. And it became a worldwide hit. He didn’t include that in the book.”

Everyone in music already knew Kelly and Clive were on rocky ground circa 2007. The two publically fought over the direction of her album My December, which Clive considers a failure, but Kelly crowns as her most personal.

Anyway, it’s clear their relationship is very personal now, and not in a good way. Chances are (0%) they won’t be in a recording booth together anytime soon.
