Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Announce ‘Big, Gay’ Wedding

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been engaged for four years, but today it has actual meaning for the couple who vowed to not get married until all their gay and lesbian friends could also.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, striking down Proposition 8, the couple celebrated by re-proposing to one another on Twitter this morning.

Here are their tweets:

Back in August 2012, speaking on California’s controversial Prop 8, Kristen explained, “The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends.”

“I’ll feel more comfortable having a party, or whatever we have, if anything, if half of our friends who are homosexuals [can celebrate]…it’s just kind of rude to invite everyone to a party for a rite not everyone can hold.”

Following this morning’s historic moment, activists haven’t achieved legalization of same-sex marriage per se, but it’s progress—another significant step forward for marriage equality, which also means one cork closer to breaking out the champagne for Kristen and Dax.
