Well, the Game of Thrones panel at SXSW certainly was exciting!
While we’d secretly been hoping that we might get some kind of trailer, or at least a bit of new footage, at the panel, it’s not hugely surprising that showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff elected to keep things hidden until a little closer to the new season’s premiere date.
What is surprising, though, is the brazen way in which Maisie Williams dropped an enormous potential spoiler for the upcoming episodes, and the way in which everyone around her recoiled in fear.
Actors accidentally letting slip about movie details really isn’t anything new. In this instance, though, it’s the forthright earnestness that Williams displayed which made everything incredibly awkward and tense for a few seconds in the middle of the panel.
Apparently, the question was asked by a member of the audience as to why Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, currently has blonde hair – surely, if she’s to be appearing in future episodes of Game of Thrones, she would need to have red hair to match her character.
According to reports, Maisie Williams stepped in to answer the question with two words: “She’s dead”.
The panel then fell silent.

Now, there’s every chance that Williams was simply making a joke which didn’t go down very well. But there was some genuine concern and fear from panel members, as the audience didn’t react with the laughter that Williams might have been expecting.
We have a long wait ahead of us before we’ll discover whether Masie Williams was telling the truth, and Sansa Stark does actually die in the upcoming seventh season of Game of Thrones.
While it’s unlikely that Williams was telling the truth, if this does prove to be the case, we might have just been given one of the biggest, most blatant spoilers in Game of Thrones history.
