Which DCEU Villain Movies Will Actually Get Made?

The DCEU has way too many villain movies in development.

It’s logical, I suppose. This entire cinematic universe is built around the idea that Superman is a jerk, so naturally, the villains fit the aesthetic that the Snyderverse has been building to.

“Suicide Squad” is not a great movie, but it did make a lot of money. So, here we are, in a world where there are multiple Joker movies in development at the same time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is currently shaking up its DC movie slate, with several projects being cancelled, while others are going to be fast-tracked.

There’s no clear list of movies that will or won’t be made. As such, it’s time to speculate about which of DC’s villain movies will actually get made!

So Many Villains, So Little Time

Martin Scorsese is producing a Joker origin movie, with Joaquin Phoenix rumored to be taking on the title role. Meanwhile, Jared Leto is apparently also getting his own solo Joker film.

That’s going to be interesting.

I get the feeling that the Scorsese project might be falling apart, hence DC’s eagerness to get another Joker movie into pre-production to take its place.

I’m not sure we’ll ever get the Jared Leto movie either. Instead, I think the studio is in a holding pattern of announcing movies just to make it seem like they’re busy. The idea of a Joker film must have caught someone’s attention, so we’re going to get one of these announced every so often just to make it seem like DC is making progress on this film.

There’s a couple of female led movies on the horizon, and they all involve Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Cathy Yan is going to direct a Birds of Prey film featuring Harley, while “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer is planning to make a Gotham City Sirens film.

There’s also (supposedly) a “Suicide Squad 2” in development, as well as a Joker vs Harley movie, a solo Harley film, and a Deadshot movie. Supposedly. These seem a bit shaky to me, but we might eventually get another “Suicide Squad”.

I suspect we might get either “Birds of Prey” or “Gotham City Sirens”, but I doubt we’ll get both. At least, not both with Harley Quinn.

Then, there’s the Black Adam film that Dwayne Johnson has been working on since before the dawn of time. This thing has been in pre-production for so long now that it almost feels like it’ll never happen, but I could conceivably see it getting more attention once “Shazam!” is out.

DC has also announced a “Lobo” movie, but that’s never ever ever going to happen. So Lobo fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

So Which Movies Will We Get?

I get the feeling that most of these films are probable destined to be cancelled. Directors and producers will leave projects, things will shift, and films will quietly disappear from Warner Bros’ production slate.

If I had to pick some that might actually get made, my money’s on “Gotham City Sirens” and “Black Adam”. These movies have the biggest stars attached, and Warner Bros is going to want to take advantage of that.

Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if all these movies got cancelled. The DCEU’s dark, gritty tone has proven unpopular with audiences. The studio seems to be moving away from grumpy films to give us a more bright, colorful “Aquaman”, “Wonder Woman 2”, and “Shazam!”.

The age of supervillain movies might already be over.

If that’s the case, it’s no big loss.
