Nothing screams “identity crisis” more than KFC’s decision to unveil their THIRD celebrity Colonel Sanders in less than a year!
Set to debut in a commercial during this year’s Super Bowl pregame on February 7, KFC will introduce a revamped Colonel to be the new face of the world famous chicken chain. The new celebrity playing the Colonel won't be revealed until the commercial airs. This is cool and all, except for the fact that this is their third celebrity colonel in a little under 10 months. Will the real Colonel Sanders please stand up?!
After a 21-year marketing hiatus, actor Darrell Hammond reprised the role of Colonel Sanders in KFC’s advertising campaigns in May of 2015. In August, Saturday Night Live alum Norm McDonald took over the precarious position.
In a bizarre Christmas-themed teaser that was released on February 1, KFC bid farewell to McDonald, and set forth to introduce a new Colonel in hopes of boosting sales for the struggling brand.
According to Business Insider, in 2014 Chick-fil-A surpassed KFC to become the number one chicken chain in the United States, with 1,900 stores and nearly $6 billion in sales. KFC had $4.2 billion in sales with 4,200 stores.
