20 Stars Who Left Scientology

After divorcing Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes left the Church of Scientology. Though raised a Catholic, she joined the religion upon dating Tom.

Nicole Kidman also left Scientology after her divorce from Tom Cruise in 2001.

Jerry Seinfeld admitted to studying Scientology for a brief time in 2007, but didn't do much. "I just did a little, but I liked it," he admitted.

Jason Beghe left the church in 2007. "Scientology is destructive and a rip-off," the actor said in a video rant a year later. "It's very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychology, mental, emotional health and evolution."

Director and screenwriter Paul Haggis left the church in 2009 after being a member for over 30 years. He was turned off by the religion after the San Diego branch of the church spoke out against Proposition 8.

"Arrested Development" star Jeffrey Tambor tested the Scientology waters, but ultimately it wasn't for him. “I took some Scientology classes at one time, studied Scientology for a while, but no more,” he said in 2007. “I have nothing against it, but I am no longer a Scientologist.”

Lisa Marie Presley broke up with the church through her song "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" in 2012.

Russell Crowe was another who tested out Scientology's practices, but left before fully committing to its teachings. “I read 'Dianetics' by L. Ron Hubbard, I got a couple of videos and I took it all in. It just seems like a religion that is perfect for people who feel like they need a grounding, who feel that the world has run off on them."

Superman himself, Christopher Reeve, was a Scientologist for a brief time after getting recruited outside a supermarket in 1975.

'I've always felt there was something different in there (my personality), but I was scared to look for fear I wouldn't find anything," said Swayze. "That's the reason I got into Buddhism, took est training, was into therapy, into Scientology, into Transcendental Meditation. I was trying to support that side of myself."

Another of Tom Cruise's ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, who left the church after the divorce.

Demi Moore was another A-list star desired by the church, though she was never officially a member.

"Top Gun" producer Don Simpson was a Scientologist in the '70s, but after spending more than $25,000 on courses without seeing much life improvement, he left. "At that point I realized it was a con," He told "Premiere" magazine.

Michael Fairman of "The Young & The Restless" joined Scientology in 2003, but left after some disagreements with the church.

Sonny Bono had a fling with Scientology, which was something Cher never fully understood.

Larry Anderson of "Days of Our Lives" became frustrated with the church's basic teachings and high membership costs in 2008. "I looked around and everybody's in a standing ovation, getting their checkbooks out. I thought, 'Oh, my God, we are sheeple.' Not me. I'm out.''

Jeff Conaway believed the church was working for him up until his death. “I’ve been doing Scientology...my doctor was like, 'Holy cow,' he says, 'Whatever you’ve been doing keep doing it because it’s really working.'”

The late Isaac Hayes was a Scientology member since the mid-'90s. His role on "South Park" became compromised however when the provocative program began making fun of the religion and he "was under great pressure from Scientology" to resign from the cartoon.

Candice Bergen was supposedly connected with the religion in the late '60s, but left before it became as prominent as it is now.

While there are rumors Will Smith was recruited by the Church of Scientology, he denied the allegations.
