The Best, Most Completely Insane Moments From “Westworld” (So Far) May 1, 2018

What are the craziest Westworld moments?
It took me a hot minute to get into Westworld, but, boy, am I glad I did. Even if I understand only half of what's going on most of the time, it's a damn delight to muddle through. But things haven't really cleared up in Season 2, have they? Even if they have become rather more topical. This season we've learned about murder, tigers and corporate corruption. Maeve has even given us a handy lesson on the perils of white feminism. So let's get up to speed. Here are the craziest Westworld moments we've seen on the show. So far, anyway. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Westworld Is On An Island!

I mean, at least I think it is? Bernard wakes up in the surf and there's something about the Chinese government? But then there's also, like, multiple Westworlds across the planet? Okay, let's be honest: I don't really know what's going on here.

Arnold Programmed Dolores To Shoot Him!

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] One of the big mysteries of season one was how Arnold died - and if it was a failing of the park. We find out that he essentially committed suicide! And programmed Dolores as Wyatt to murder him. If there's a crazier way to kill yourself, I haven't heard it.

Paolo From Lost Actually Kicks Total Ass!

Oh, you remember Paolo and Nikki from Lost, right? Well turns out Paolo AKA Rodrigo Santoro actually is a legit rockstar, giving Westworld's Hector some real depth of character in addition to smoldering hotness. He's come a long way from playing sad, sad Karl in Love Actually.

“Under All These Lives I’ve Lived, Something New Has Been Growing”

With this line from Dolores, we're given confirmation of what we've grown to suspect in season one. The hosts - not just Dolores, but particularly Dolores - do remember their past experiences. All these lives and deaths have combined to make her what she is now - a robot hellbent on revenge.

We Have No Idea When TF Anything Is Happening!

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] One thing I know for sure watching Westworld: I have absolutely no clue at all when anything is taking place. Fan-created graphics like this one do help, but still. With so many characters who don't age and are constantly coming back to life, it's hard to maintain a grip on what's real and when.

Westworld Loves Radiohead!

Radiohead is timeless, we all knew that. But who knew they sounded so damn good on a player piano? No Surprises is my favorite, but we've come to expect that anytime there's a haunting refrain playing over a scene, it was most likely written by Thom Yorke.

The Maze Isn’t Real!

After all that scalping and searching, we learn in the end of season one that the maze is not a maze at all. It's simply a marker to evaluate Dolores's cognitive development. Bad news for the Man In Black, who thinks he's been searching for a place that never existed at all.

Maeve Is The Ultimate Hero!

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] One of my favorite things to see as Westworld develops is the emergence of Maeve as the true hero of the show. It's not Teddy; it's not even Dolores. Maeve, driven by the memories of her daughter, becomes the most human of all the hosts, and with her humanity comes the power of leadership.

Westworld Techs Are Awful Pimps!

Okay, I mean maybe it wasn't totally shocking to find out that the low-level Delos techs pimp out the hosts who come in for refurbishment. But it's certainly gross as hell. Also, makes it all the more satisfying when Maeve the madam rises up and takes them all down.

Teddy Murdered All The Hosts!

I mean, I guess? Not gonna lie, still not 100% sure what happened here. But Teddy and Dolores have been a pair from the beginning, and he is an active part of the murders at Escalante - or at least what he remembers as the murders at Escalante. Now that I'm writing this, I'm gonna go ahead and admit that I still don't fully know what happened in whose memory.

Robert Programmed Dolores To Shoot Him!

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] First Arnold and now Robert, shot dead by Dolores. I don't suppose it's particularly surprising that the coward Robert Ford would elaborately orchestrate his own assassination. But that doesn't make the reveal of the beginning of Robert's new narrative any less shocking when it actually happens.

A TIGER?!

craziest westworld moments
There's a tiger in Westworld? Much like the reveal of a polar bear on the island in Lost, the appearance of a tiger in Westworld is designed, I suppose, to make us question all we thought we knew about the place. But have we ever really known anything for certain?

Robert Ford Keeps A Creepy Robot Family!

craziest westworld moments
This bonkers reveal was touched on and then weirdly abandoned. Robert Ford keeps a reconstructed version of his own family - and himself as a child - just hanging out in the park? In season two we see the young robot Robert wandering around spouting off poetic shit to William, but I'm left wondering what exactly this pseudo family is supposed to tell us about his character.

Bernard Is A Hitman Who Maybe Murdered Elsie!

craziest westworld moments
[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] Hey, remember Elsie? Remember how Bernard maybe murdered her? Well, I mean, we know Bernard definitely murdered Theresa, and scads of other people at Robert's orders. He is QUITE an effective hitman. But we don't actually see enough details of his attack on Elsie to be certain that she's dead - and who knows when that even happened anyway? Odds are she'll pop up again soon enough.

Dolores And Teddy Have Actual Chemistry!

craziest westworld moments
This was one of the most shocking moments of the season two premiere. We've been watching Dolores and Teddy get all romantic with each other since the premiere, but at the end, when they kiss...wow. Teddy has really come into his own as the beta to Dolores's alpha.

Tessa Thompson's CEO Is A Legit Villain!

craziest westworld moments
She's so charismatic and beautiful that it's hard to believe that she's also twisted as fuck. Charlotte the CEO is just as much an amoral rapist as any human involved in Westworld. And as season two reveals more and more about the nefarious nature of Delos, I expect Charlotte's malignancy will only become more illuminated.

The Man In Black Is William!

craziest westworld moments
[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] Didn't think I was gonna forget about this wowza, did you? From the moment young William picks a white hat before entering the park, the show works hard to throw us off from this reveal. And it works, because when we find out that the Man In Black is actually old William, it throws into question everything we thought we knew about Westworld.

Bernard Is A Host!

craziest westworld moments
Holy shit. I'm still not over this reveal. Bernard is not just a host created by Robert Ford, but he's a host created in the exact image of the suicided Arnold. The man who we thought held so much power is also the one most easily manipulated by anyone with the controls. What's gonna happen to Bernard in the war of hosts vs. humans? I've got zero fucking idea.

Delos Is Logging Guests’ DNA!

craziest westworld moments
One of the biggest and most timely reveals of the season two premiere is that Delos is collecting and logging guests' DNA. For what? Something fucking creepy, that's what. After Cambridge Analytica and Zuckerberg's congressional testimony, this edges pretty close to TOO REAL territory for some of us IRL.

This Show Is Maybe Just Too Oblique!

craziest westworld moments
[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] I thought that after watching the second episode of season two that I would have an actual idea of what is going on and where things are heading. But as it turns out...nope! While Westworld is fun - and beautiful - to watch, at no point have I ever had a complete handle on what is going on, plotwise. It's maybe just too oblique altogether - a revelation which for once I find comforting.
