Movies about artificial intelligence

So what if everyone you love is a robot?

We all lie awake at night contemplating the likelihood that our lives are illusions that robots created for us. Right? These movies about artificial intelligence won't help your insomnia but they will give you something fun to watch while you obsess over the inevitable demise of humanity. Sure, robots are probably going to take all our jobs away and make human intimacy obsolete. And it's likely that sentient androids on the brink of existential crises will one day become a problem for humans.  But that doesn't mean we should stop enjoying movies about artificial intelligence.  After all, they might be our best guide to surviving a robot filled future.

The Terminator

A super soldier cyborg assassin gets sent through time from AI controlled 2029 to 1984 to kill the mother of the leader of the human resistance before he could even be born. The assassin is followed through time by a human soldier whose job is to project the baby mama target but actually just impregnates her with the leader of the human resistance. Oh irony! Plus the Terminator only exists because pieces of it’s destroyed body were found by crafty 1980s scientists who used it to reverse engineer the f---ing Terminators! Come with me if you want to lose hours of your day contemplating the intricacies and consequences of time travel.

2001: A Space Odyssey

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] This epic Kubrick masterpiece features one of the creepiest and most legendary AI moments in movie history. When sentient spaceship computer Hal, who takes his job very seriously, realizes that the human astronauts aboard his ship are feeling a little uncomfortable with his behavior he decides it would probably just be best to shut off all their life support. Sounds like a hostile work environment to me!

Transcendence

In this Johnny Depp movie from 2014 that literally nobody knows about, Depp plays an AI building scientist who gets shot by an anti-technology terrorist organization and decides to upload his brain to the quantum computer he has created since his body isn’t going to make it. He manages to create lots of ground breaking, world changing, technological advances in this human brain/supercomputer hybrid state but people start getting uncomfortable once he gains the ability to hack into and control people's minds.

Star Trek Generations

Star Trek Generations may not be thought of as an AI movie but it does feature one of the best known and beloved AI characters of all time, Data. Originally seen in the tv show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data is a self aware android who cares deeply about other people, even if he often struggles to understand them. Star Trek Generations also features Data’s trusty companion and beloved pet, Spot, a cat who has no spots.

The Matrix

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] Following in the footsteps of philosophers and classic AI movies alike, The Matrix asks the ultimate question, “Is my life real or is it an illusion being created for me by a giant artificial intelligence system that has decimated humanity and is now using my body as a battery?” Yup, pretty sure that’s the question Descartes was getting at all along.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

It may sound like a great idea to put a childlike robot who is programmed to love its owners into the homes of couples whose biological children have died or are in suspended animation because they have an incurable disease. But maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised if things get messy when the original kid shows back up after a miraculous recovery to find some weird new brother with questionable social skills living his life. Don’t worry Danny, Mommy’s heart has room for you AND the new replacement you. And maybe we should plan on finding a better solution to this familial drama than just dropping off the robot child who loves you and just wants to be a real boy in the woods somewhere like a cute raccoon you caught in a trap. That little Pinocchio is going to need years of therapy.

RoboCop

Corruption runs rampant in this badass '80s action flick about a Detroit police officer who gets knowingly sent into an uber dangerous situation so his dead body can used to become the first RoboCop, a cybernetic super soldier with a human brain. Though RoboCop’s memories are initially wiped they eventually come back and, lets just say, it doesn’t end well for  most people involved.

Bicentennial Man

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] In what is definitely his best robot who wants to be human role, Robin Williams plays Andrew, a housekeeping robot who develops the ability to feel emotions. Lucky for Andrew, his beneficent slave master, I mean, owner, decides that treating the (robot) help like a person is the right thing to do and he encourages Andrew to explore his creative human-y side. Eventually Andrew asks for his freedom which his owner begrudgingly gives by banishing him. Call me crazy but the freedom to spend decades in solitude, away from everyone you’ve ever loved is probably not what Andrew actually had in mind. Eventually time passes on, Andrew pairs up with an engineer who makes him all human looking, he falls in love with the great grand daughter of his former owner, and he petitions the government to be recognized as human. What. A. Journey.

Der Hert Der Welt

Der Hert der Welt, or Master of the World, is a German film from 1934 that has some pretty important ethical questions to ask about the use of robots in society. Nobody in 1934 seemed all that interested in whether or not robots had feelings that we should take into consideration but there was certainly concern over the eradication of jobs for humans because machines were potentially more efficient and cheaper. Der Hert der Wert solves this problem by eventually giving the robots all the shitty soul crushing jobs nobody actually wants and then giving all those now unemployed humans much more enjoyable robot maintenance jobs. Everybody wins!

Ex Machina

The thesis of this haunting and pretty stressful movie is essentially that artificial intelligence will become indistinguishable from human intelligence the minute it starts intentionally screwing people over. Ah yes, being a self centered asshole, the most human of qualities. The movie also confirms that if you create a self aware sex robot that you specifically programmed to have human-esque thoughts and feelings it is totally your fault when that sex robot gets sick of your bullshit and tries to kill you.

Wall-E

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] This animated movie follows the story of a sentient little robot who was left on Earth after humans had to flee the planet because they’d turned it into a literal dumpster fire. Wall-E spends his days carousing mountains of trash and has two great loves, recycling and old school movie musicals. His cute little robot life gets turned upside down when, in quick succession, he finds a tiny plant, he meets a cute girl robot, and hitches a ride to space! Long story short Wall-E and his lil plant buddy convince humans to return to Earth and everyone lives happily ever after.

Her

We all know how hard it is to get a match on Tinder when you’re a depressed, soon to be divorced, middle aged white man with a creepy mustache. The struggle is real. Lucky for us all in the breath of fresh air that is “Her” we FINALLY get to see a sad struggling creepy white man find love, at least temporarily. Unfortunately this love story between sad man and computer with sexy lady voice hits a few bumps, like when it’s revealed that sexy lady computer has been two timing sad man with every other sad man who purchased her operating system or when sexy lady computer eventually leaves sad man to go off and exist in metaspace. Ugh women, right?!

Metropolis

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] Two and half hour long silent films from 1927 may not be your cup of tea but if it is you should definitely check Metropolis out. This is the very first movie to ever feature artificial intelligence, in this case a robot created to look like Maria, a beloved leader of working class joes in a dystopian future where class differences have really gotten out of hand. The robot is created in an attempt to sully her reputation by stirring up chaos but of course this gets out of hand, real Maria has to save a bunch of children from certain death, and robot Maria eventually gets burned at the stake. Classic!

Demon Seed

This wonderful trash fest is a must see for anyone who likes their Artificial Intelligence Sci-Fi films to be touched with an edge of ridiculous smut and a lot of uncomfortable coerced impregnation. When a supercomputer takes over its inventors house and builds itself a body it eventually imprisons the inventor’s wife and impregnates her with a half robot, half human, demon baby in an attempt to create a new computer life form that people will have to be nice to because it came out of a lady. Which is a great plan since there has definitely never been a case of discrimination against a person who came out of a lady. Nope, definitely never.

Blade Runner

This dreamy wanna be art film directed by Ridley Scott is here to fuel all your existential panic with important questions like “What actually makes a human human?” and “Is my life as I remember it an illusion” and “How can I be certain that I’m not a robot?” Well Debra, you can’t. After 36 years we’re still not even sure who is a robot in this movie about robots.

Robot And Frank

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] This movie is funny and sweet, two words that rarely pop up when talking about artificial intelligence. Robot and Frank is the story of an aging jewel thief, suffering from dementia, whose son gets him a robot to keep him company. Though initially Frank isn’t so sure about his new robot companion eventually he decides he’s into it once he realizes the robot could help him pull off one last jewel heist in an attempt to impress a librarian he has a crush on. CUTE!

Short Circuit

Short Circuit wins the prize for having the laziest and least believable explanation for a robot becoming sentient… struck by lightning! What are the odds? Despite this nonsense, this 80s robot classic about a military robot intended for use in the Cold War, turned cheesy and charming friend to a Seattle animal lover, is a pretty good time.

Big Hero 6

Big Hero 6 is both a major tear jerker and a gloriously beautiful work of animation. The movie follows Hiro, a 14-year-old robotics genius who befriends an inflatable healthcare robot, Baymax, that was invented by his older brother, who recently died in a tragic accident. Baymax’s only imperative is to help people feel better so he makes it his personal mission to cheer Hiro up after the death of his brother. Best. Robot. Ever.

Westworld

[dx_custom_adunit desktop_id="RTK_K67O" mobile_id="RTK_5yk0"] The inspiration for the, much more favourably received, modern television show, Westworld the movie was written by none other than Jurassic Park creator Michael Crichton. Do you ever wonder what kind of messed up Six Flags experience Michael Crichton had as a child that inspired him to be so obsessed with dangerous theme parks built on questionable ethics? I do.
