20. False Alarm

We are going to start things off with something really scary! The Russian Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov was in command of a USSR bunker and out of nowhere, the sirens started making noise.

It was a false alarm and luckily, the Lt. Colonel decided to wait a couple of minutes instead of firing back.

19. Vulcan Eruption

A Vulcan located in the Aegan Island of Thera erupted during the mid-second millennium BCE. The eruption is believed to have had the destructive force of 40 atomic bombs exploding at the same time!

As you can imagine, the eruption almost wiped off humankind from the face of the Earth.

18. Computer Chip

A cheap 50-cent computer chip went nuts and it showed that 220 nuclear missiles are coming to hit the US. This happened back in 1980 and fortunately, the Air Force staffer decided to look at other radars before hitting the “Fire” button.

17. Destroying the Ozone Layer

Back in 1985, air conditioner manufacturing companies started using CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) which were destroying the ozone layer. Luckily, the scientists were quick to act and they banned the use of CFC in aerosols.
