Food Donation Mistakes Everyone Makes
The Do’s And Don’ts
As we enter holiday seasons, it’s always great to acknowledge and appreciate all that we have and that we have the means to provide the necessities in life.
Whether you’re planning to donate food this year or just want to see how it works, here are some do’s and don’ts for making food donations!
Check The Time
Before you visit your closest food bank to donate, check online or call in for its opening hours to avoid making a wasted journey! Many food banks have special opening hours or are only open on certain days when staff or volunteers are available.
No Open Foods
Never donate opened food cans, bags, or bottles to food banks. While you might think you’re conserving, they can’t accept bags or cans that have been previously opened or punctured, or dented for health and safety reasons.
Unlike clothing, there’s nothing anyone can do with used food.
Expiry Date
This one might come as common sense to most but for some people out there, it needs to be stated! Do not donate food that has passed its expiration date. Expired food is a big don’t! If you shouldn’t be eating it, neither should anyone else.
Cold Foods
When it comes to foods that need to be kept cold and refrigerated, check with your donation center to see if they can take them. Some food banks can take these foods and are really grateful to have them.
Others do not have refrigeration and are dry facilities. so, always call first!
