The Most Bizarre and Tragic Real Ways People Died in 2018

Freak accidents occur all the time. Most times, people manage to make it out alive, albeit with a few weird scars and an even weirder story. Sometimes, though, folks aren’t so lucky. And this was a year full of weirdness.

So this list of the most bizarre deaths of 2018 will definitely leave you feeling better off (and a little more cautious of garden snails).

Sam Ballard was a 29-year-old rugby player in Sydney who had swallowed a slug on a dare eight years earlier. By the time he was 28, he had been in a coma and was paralyzed. He died in October of Angiostrongyliasis (rat lungworm).

Rat lungworm is a parasite that lives in rodents and can be passed onto snails and slugs. Within days of eating the slug, Ballard complained of severe pain in his legs.

The parasite infested his brain, leaving him paralyzed and unable to eat or breathe on his own for years.

In February, 28-year-old Puneet Kaur visited Aqua Village Amusement Park near Pinjore Gardens with her family. When the group decided to take a turn on the go-karts, Kaur’s hair got caught in the rear axle, ripping her scalp from her head.

Authorities say Kaur was conscious immediately following the accident, although she was in pain and confused about what had happened. She was pronounced dead by the time she was transferred to the general hospital in Panchkula.
