Chaotic Classroom Moments That Still Bother Teachers
School is a very fulfilling experience, and not just in an educational sense. It can be educative, warming, perplexing, terrible, and wonderful all at the same time.
It does not matter what kind of a school experience you had, it’s an experience one does not easily forget. Today we will be sharing some of the most memorable school experiences!
Sowing The Seeds
User ash_27th worked as a biology teacher at a private school. During finals, students only come to school to write their test and then leave at 10 am. Teachers, however, stay longer to mark all the exam papers she explains.
When the students leave for the holidays, teachers need to stay on campus for longer to prepare for the following year. The user posted about a meeting that occurred that morning. She met up with a fellow teacher who was the mother of one of her student’s.
She shared with the user that her daughter loved biology and that she was proud of her final exam performance. The user shared with her colleague that her daughter was a bright student and she was pleasant to work with.
Her co-worker told her that at her daughter’s previous schools, the science teachers lacked imagination and she despised the sciences. This was the case up until ash_27th became her teacher!
The conversation continued and the mother shared that her daughter wanted to pursue a dentistry career. After hearing this, the user had a revelation. She thought about how she was not responsible for her co-worker’s daughter’s bright future, she was born to do great things!
As a teacher who loved her job, all she did was show her that studying biology can be fun and interesting! The fact that they take what she teaches them, and turned them into great careers is the reason why the user chose teaching as a profession!
Respectacles
Webspinner202 shared her experience as a student teacher. During 6th period, she was responsible for lunch duty. The school where she worked had two periods allocated for lunch.
The boys and girls of each grade do not eat lunch at the same time, when one group eats lunch, the other partakes in activities. The children choose their lunch tables and it seems to the user that after a few weeks that the students have official lunch tables.
One day during her lunch duty, she noticed a table of six girls and all of them wore glasses. These girls were known to be good hardworking students.
She thought that it was so interesting, she tried to give the table a nickname. She pondered for a few minutes until a student approached her and asked her if everything was okay. She shared that she was thinking of a nickname but “The Respectacles” wasn’t cutting it for her.
The children loved the combination of respect and spectacles! A few days after she shared the new nickname, the table called her over and yelled “Respectacles!”. The group of girls even wanted the user to purchase her own glasses so that she could be part of the group! How sweet.
Real Life Example
User TaedW posted about how their school’s materials regarding substance abuse seemed like Amish people who have never been to the city wrote it. Like a stranger approaching you in the middle of the street and demanding you take their substances.
When he asked the class what their response would be if they were ever offered strange substances the answers were ridiculous. He quieted the children, and told them what would actually happen in situations like these.
He calmly asked the class, “I’m not going to bust you, but has anyone in the room ever taken gum from a friend or classmate?” All the students started to raise their hands, except one. He smiled and asked, “Really, Gunter?
You’ve never taken gum from anyone?” The kid looked up at him and said, “No, teacher. I’m the one who has the gum.” He continued with his example by saying, “Well, we’ve met our dealer.”
The children looked at one another with a confused expression. It was clear that the students were not aware of the fact that taking strange substances was as easy as receiving gum from someone they knew.
Once the children understood that, they promptly shared their new responses if they were ever offered substances.
The class shared responses such as, “I’m not into that” and “My mom would be mad if I were to try something when I’m still a kid.” It was clear to him that the children had a better understanding of the subject.
He ran into a student years later who remembered the story fondly and shared that they found it very funny.
Talk Nonsense Get Hit
User NE_Irishguy13 instructed his class to write down a single sentence summarizing America’s response to Japan targeting Pearl Harbor as a way to get out and to read theirs to the class.
The majority of pupils reacted as expected such as, “America got mad and nuked Japan,” and “America retaliated against the Japanese and entered WWII.”
A student named John, who is not prone to interacting with the class unless if it is in a disruptive manner raised his hand and shared his sentence.
His sentence was somewhere along the lines of, “America’s reaction to the Pearl Harbor attack was essentially, ‘Talk Nonsense, Get Hit.” His sentence spoke true to who he was as a person and the Reddit user resonated with his student. Because of this, he started laughing uncontrollably.
All of the students were confused and he explained to the class that John had the right idea, even though he could’ve chosen better wording. Normally, the user would not reward cursing but that day the children went to lunch with no repercussions.
The student, John, tried to curse more during classes to make his teacher laugh but realized that it would not work but his summary was definitely an accurate depiction of America’s reaction!
