In 2006, Steven Tari proclaimed himself the “True Christ” in the mountains of Matepi in the Madang province in Papua New Guinea. Besides his 6,000 followers, he also convinced families to give him “flower girls” in exchange for God’s gift. He went to prison for alleged cannibalism and human sacrifices. He escaped in 2014 and eventually lost his life at the hands of angry villagers.
