Diver Has Encounter Of Biblical Proportions With Humpback Whale
A Massive Shadow
Michael had already gone for a dive once that day and planned to go for a second. The water was warm and clear enough to see approximately 20 feet into the water. He wanted to see what he could find on the sandy bottom, and it seemed the perfect time to do that.
The massive shadow seemed to appear out of nowhere and overwhelmed his senses. He couldn’t help but panic, knowing that he would not be able to swim away fast enough. He felt himself being bumped hard a few seconds later and his mind went blank.
His Chosen Career
Michael Packard had years of experience working in the waters near Provincetown, located at the northern tip of the Cape Cod peninsula. He often used his “Ja n J” vessel for fishing around Herring Cove Beach and loved every minute of it.
Michael spent much of his time searching for lobsters on the sandy sea bed. Despite how much he loved it, his chosen career was dangerous, and he would soon be hit with the reality of it.
A Dangerous Job
Approximately 30,000 people start diving for lobsters yearly because of how much the lobsters are worth. But that didn’t make lobster diving any less dangerous.
There are many ways of going about it, such as scuba diving, free diving, or nets. Every option has its own dangers, like becoming tangled in something or being dragged out by strong currents. Michael had grown accustomed to many of these, but there were some that he never saw coming.
Dangers Of The Water
Many dive for lobsters recreationally, but Michael did it to earn an income. However, to protect the divers and the environment, the activity involves strict rules. He ensured he took the necessary precautions every time he dove into the waters.
Cape Cod was recognized as one of the places with the most encounters with dangerous sea creatures, and Michael knew that, too. But as much as he knew, he would not be prepared for what would come.
Sharks
Michael knew that the creatures came first in the ocean and that he was in their domain. He respected them and their space. He often dove in waters filled with various sharks that lived and hunted there.
White sharks are often found in these parts and are well known for most Cape Cod attacks. Many have been wary since the 2012 attacks, but there was something else divers should have been worried about.
