Social media jobs are a dying breed. We all knew it would happen, but we didn’t know exactly when it would go down. You had to see it coming though, as being a social media star can only be so profitable. If you need any proof that getting paid to be a social media influencer is getting harder and harder, this 26-year-old went broke trying to become an Instagram star or model or whatever.
Lissette Calveiro, a self-proclaimed “CPG Publicist / Content Creator / Millennial Multi-hyphenate, lifestyle aficionada and hashtag enthusiast,” apparently went broke trying to live an Instagram-worthy life.
She would splurge on expensive meals and trips in order to provide a glimpse of the glamorous life that she just couldn’t afford.
“I wanted to tell my story about this young millennial living in New York,” she told the New York Post.
All the expensive clothing and expensive dinners and brunches caught up with her, and she became saddled with some pretty serious bills.
While working an unpaid internship in NYC, Calveiro had to pick up a part-time retail job. Even that wasn’t enough, and she had to move back home to Miami after racking up over $10,000 in debt.
She didn’t want to be seen in the same outfit twice, so her monthly shopping sprees ended up being her downfall. Luckily, she landed a well-paying job back in NYC and has learned from her mistakes. She got a less-expensive apartment, rents expensive clothes instead of buying them, and started cooking from home more often.
“Nobody talks about [his or her] finances on Instagram.” But luckily we can learn from Lissette’s mistakes. Hopefully none of us repeat them.
