Watching From Afar

The furious mom sat staring out of her car window. She’d been parked outside the Starbucks for over twenty minutes by now. She had her eyes on someone.

Her gaze was trained on the girl grinning at each car going through the drive-through. “Fake smile and a fake person,” the mom grumbled to herself. Her rage was growing steadily, and she felt ready to bash her smiling face in.

A Busy Mom

30-year-old Cheri Markhams, a mom of two from Miami, Florida, had a busy schedule. Jason, her husband, had a demanding career as a contractor, while she did administrative work part-time out of her home office.

Even when they faced hard times, the two always managed to stay afloat. But Cheri didn’t think her life was about to be turned upside down.

Another Charge

Cheri was gathering up the laundry one day when she came across a receipt in one of Jason’s pockets. The Starbucks receipt didn’t stand out at first, as he routinely picked up two coffees en route to work.

But under the service charge, there was another charge that confused her. She made a mental note to check it against the credit card statement later on.

Cheri noticed something on the statement that seemed unusual – she decided to check again. The credit card statement showed a different charge for Starbucks, separate from that on the receipt she’d found. But the dates didn’t match up.

Cheri couldn’t put the doubts out of her mind, so she decided to check out the branch of Starbucks that she knew Jason liked to stop at.
