Family Finds Message During Kitchen Remodel

She kept telling him that there was more to it than just scrawled lines made by a kid years ago. He kept up the careful job of chipping the plaster from the kitchen.

But as he chipped more and more plaster off, they started to see what it really was. But he had no idea that what he’d find would have surprising guests knocking at his door.

A Time Capsule

Living in the Chajul region his entire life, Manuel Ramirez knew that he’d be able to move in with his grandparents and start the family he’d always wanted. He wanted to continue his heritage by having kids.

After a few years, Manuel had two daughters. He liked the idea of his forefathers looking down from heaven and smiling proudly. And what he’d do in his grandparents’ house would take things a step further.

A Good Man

Manuel considered himself a good person. He lived with his aunt a few miles away before moving into his ancestral home, his grandparents’ house which they left him. He was 32-years-old and as such was a respected man in the village.

He was especially looked up to because he was a high school teacher at the village’s school and even worked as a librarian in the village’s library. But once he inherited his grandparents’ house, he knew that he had moved up the social ladder of the village.

In Need Of Renovations

Cualli was Manuel’s wife and the whole family moved into their new house. But when they got there, Manuel noticed a few things that were very off.

Even if the house did look stunning, it was in dire need of repairs. Cualli wanted the kitchen, in particular, to be renovated as soon as possible. But Manuel had no idea what he would find while making the renovations his wife wanted.

Keeping Its Beauty

The married couple decided to do the renovations themselves. The kitchen was the first room on their list since it needed a lot of work. Manuel thought about how the house had always been in the family. His grandparents inherited it just like he did.

Because of how old the house was, it had a very traditional Mayan aesthetic. Even if Manuel needed to change a few things to keep it fairly modern, he wanted to honor his ancestors and keep its original beauty.
