Giant 18th-Century Ice House Discovered Beneath the Streets of London
Even though ice might be one of the few things that everyone has in their fridge nowadays, this wasn’t always the case. Ice was actually a rare commodity back in the 18th-century and only the richest people could get access to it during the summer.
This is why there were special ice houses hidden all throughout London back during the Industrial Revolution. However, no one expected to find a massive ice house hiding right beneath the streets of London.
20. Precious Ice
As previously mentioned, ice was really hard to find during the hot summer days back in 18th-century London. This is why people would chop huge blocks of ice from cool places and then bring them back to London and keep them in special ice houses.
19. The Industrial Revolution
London was the world’s most important technology hub during the Industrial Revolution. This is where all the new inventions would appear and why the English were among the first ones to design ice houses.
18. The Good Life
Even though local businesses were making lots of money thanks to the Industrial Revolution, this doesn’t mean that everyone was rich and living a good life. In fact, the Industrial Revolution had brought more problems to people than benefits.
17. Out of a Job
The Industrial Revolution also saw the introduction of automation lines and machines which took the places of people in factories. This meant that many were left jobless and they had no way of making money.
