Kevin spent his days pondering Ruth’s decision to live and sleep in her car rather than her perfectly decent home, which was just a short drive away. Although she was a pleasant person, Kevin never saw her enter her own house.

 A terrible smell greeted Kevin as soon as he stepped inside the home, and every step he took was accompanied by piles of trash.

Kevin Hardly Knew His Neighbor

Kevin Burns had lived across the street from Ruth for a few years, but they didn’t know each other well.

Ruth had retired a few years before and lived alone in her home and that was about all that Burns knew about her situation. Little did he know that they would strike up a friendship very soon.

She Owned a Home— But Lived in Her Car

Sadly, Burns saw Ruth sleep in her car every day instead of the house up the driveway. Burns couldn’t believe that she would choose to live in her car when he knew that she had a home just up the sidewalk.

But it had been weeks since he had last seen her step foot in her home.

What Was Wrong With Her Situation?

Every time Burns passed by Ruth’s car, he checked to see if she was awake and said hello. Sometimes he would start a conversation with her to slowly try and put together the pieces of the puzzle of her situation together.

It saddened him that she lived and slept in her car, but there must be a reason she downgraded from her home to a car in its driveway.

Her Whole Life Was in Her Car

When he passed her on the street and looked in her car, Burns could tell that Ruth was embarrassed by her situation. But why should she be?

She was a homeowner and had a car of her own. Even though she had retired a few years ago, she still seemed to have her life in a good place, didn’t she?
