A Cry For Help

Others failed to see him while they all regarded him with full contempt. He exhaled deeply, turned to face the sky, and begged for assistance to whichever god was watching.

He turned after looking down again to see a guy glaring at him. It was an all-seeing, all-judging glare that was searing. He abruptly became aware of his tears. He turned away in embarrassment, entirely unaware that he had been overheard.

Chauncy Jones

Chauncy Jones, 16, had another challenging day. Jones shared an apartment with his mother in one of Memphis, Tennessee’s most underprivileged neighborhoods.

Due to a cruel turn of events, Jones was a disadvantaged teenager who had to deal with all the difficulties that come with being poor as a child. In order to survive, he needed to think quickly, and today was no different.

Little Chance

The day began normally, but it wouldn’t finish that way. Jones remembered how he often passed his hour while awaiting the school bus home, looking discouraged and humiliated.

He added that he would take the bus to what he called the “rich people’s Kroger” in order to work and try to get some money so that he could purchase food for his mother and himself.

A Good Mother

The one thing Jones’s fate did not mess up was his mother’s love for him. Jones was concerned for her since they had such a close, loving relationship.

Jones’ mother had long-standing medical conditions that kept her out of work. Her whole disability allowance was now going toward rent. She was struggling to cope. Jones was made to feel as though an iron grip was around his chest due to this fact.

Felt Obligated

He wanted to assist her, but they had resources and nobody to turn to. Since his father was no longer involved, it fell heavily on him to take care of her.

Jones got off the bus at Kroger at 4 p.m. and started walking there. Unaware of what would happen today, he prepared for another hour of humiliating himself in front of others.
