Lifeguards are responsible for many duties; monitoring beaches and pool areas, looking out for infractions and safety hazards, preventing people from entering the water when the weather conditions are bad.

Although most importantly, lifeguards are accountable for saving lives.

One lifeguard in Florida saved a man from drowning only to find out later that he was fired for doing so. Not only was the young man fired, but his colleagues were also temporarily laid off for sticking up for him.

Tomas Lopez was a 21-year-old lifeguard who worked at Hallandale Beach located 20 miles north of Miami. Tomas loved his job, got along well with his coworkers, and overall was an honest, kind man.

Lopez worked at a beautiful tiny beach called Hallandale, where serious accidents rarely happened due to its small size. However, one day, a visitor almost lost his life while swimming close to the beach area.

Despite monitoring the visitors, lifeguards had plenty of other responsibilities that needed to be taken care of. There was always something to do for the lifeguards of Hallandale Beach.

Tomas was often occupied by cleaning the beach area, removing objects from the sea, or writing reports on the beach condition. The hot weather was exhausting, but a quick dip into the ocean was his escape.
